Alex has such an intelligent and gentle manner about her that it was with full confidence that I put myself in her hands. She helped ease my movement and made me aware of the body’s alignment and how to adjust it. She and Feldenkrais really made a difference." - Susan
Alex made me more aware of how years in an office environment had affected my posture. I’m sitting up straighter now and feel calmer and more alert, thanks to her FI sessions." - Richard, PhD, Retired Academic Librarian and Scholar
What is Functional Integration?
Functional Integration® (FI) is the hands-on, individualized form of the Feldenkrais Method®. In an FI lesson, I guide you through gentle, non-invasive touch and movement. My touch reflects how you currently organize your body and actions, and I invite you toward new, more comfortable and efficient movement patterns.
What happens in a session?
You’ll usually lie fully clothed on a low, padded table designed for this work. Sometimes, depending on your needs, we may also work with you sitting or standing. I may use props (pillows, rollers, pads) to support comfort, clarify a movement, or make it easier to explore. Sessions are quiet, spacious, and tailored moment-by-moment to your unique body, circumstances, and goals.

[Alex] has helped me deal with some complicated physical issues and given me great insight into managing my neurological pain and working to regain my sensory perception and the use of my body." - Dan
For more than a decade my body’s been in pretty immense disrepair. It seems so obvious to me now—having had the opportunity to learn about Feldenkrais from [Alex] who’s quite demonstratively a skilled practitioner—but I’d never thought about repairing that body by mending its relationship with the world that keeps it aloft. The whole of what keeps one standing is a pattern of interactions too often taken for granted, and Feldenkrais can undoubtedly play a pivotal role in re-establishing the lines of flight a body follows on the way to reconciliation and relaxation. It’s a mesmerizing blend of subtlety and mindfulness. I’m sure I’d be in an impossibly different place without it." - Jim

What does it feel like?
The touch is gentle, respectful, and never forceful. Many people describe FI as calming, deeply restful, and surprisingly enjoyable. You may feel lighter, taller, freer in your movement, or simply more at ease. The focus isn’t on “fixing” you, but on helping you discover new ways of moving and being that reduce effort and increase comfort.
Who is it for?
FI is for people of all ages and abilities. Some come with chronic pain, injury, or neurological conditions. Others are artists, athletes, or musicians looking to refine their performance. Many simply want to move more comfortably, improve balance, or feel better in daily life.

After just one session [with Alex], I immediately noticed a positive change and improvement in my posture and the way I move. At one point in particular I remember feeling my entire spine move. It was an entirely new sensation and I couldn't help but smile and laugh as I realized that it is supposed to feel that way...the movement was so easy! I can't wait for my next FI lesson." - James, Woodwind Specialist, Touring Musician
What are the benefits?
People often notice changes after their very first lesson. Benefits can include:
- Relief from pain and tension
- Easier, more efficient posture and movement
- Better balance, coordination, and flexibility
- Improved breathing, sleep, and overall well-being
- Increased creativity, focus, and physical confidence
How is this different from other therapies?
FI is not massage, chiropractic, or physical therapy. Instead of applying force, we use awareness and learning. You become an active participant in sensing new options for movement and self-organization. Over time, you’ll learn how to carry these discoveries into daily life so your comfort and mobility continue to grow beyond the session itself.

"When touching I seek nothing from the person I touch; I only feel what the touched person needs... whether [they] know it or not, and what I can do at that moment to make the person feel better."
- Moshe Feldenkrais
What should I wear or bring?
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in—something similar to what you’d wear for a relaxed day at home. No special equipment is needed.
How long is a session?
Sessions are usually about 45–60 minutes. Please leave 75 minutes for your first session. Each lesson is unique, designed specifically for you in that moment.
How many sessions will I need?
That depends on your intentions. Some people feel a big shift after one lesson. Others choose a series to support recovery from pain or injury, or as part of an ongoing practice of self-care and performance. We’ll discuss your needs and design a plan that works for you.
